2000 Nissan Altima. A few days ago turned the air on and it was great. Turned it off as it got too cold due to a long drive and then 15 minutes later turned it back on and it blew hot and cold air. After getting home I opened the hood and could hear the compressor click on and the fans start and then literally seconds later it turned off. About 30 seconds later it tried turning on - cold air was produced and then it turned off and etc. The past few days - the system worked perfectly no issues. Today, the system did it's on and off act. Help - please!

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com
THanks
so the AC system was not blowing cold and the compressor was kicking on and then off?
Correct - system is trying but after it turns on and it turns off and over and over it goes.
But yesterday - it was PERFECT
When the AC system works like that, it's normally due to low freon.
So you reccomend going down to my local Pep Boys and abk them to "Fill er up?"
I understand it worked yesterday, but something may have caught the condenser or something which may be causing a small leak in the AC system and that is why the freon level is low and causing the AC compressor to kick on and off.
I would have them suck the system down and see how much freon is in the system. Then
Put the system in a vacuum, since you have to do that anyway before you charge the system and see if it holds a vacuum.
Same thing happened a few days ago - then it was fine for two and then back to this - sorry want to be clear.
This still sounds like it could be low freon level
OK I will ask - can you please give me a "ballpark" on what something like this runs so I don't fall for something out of scope.
Was the outside temperature around the same temp the other day when this happened?
Yes - no change and I even tried it one morning when the car was cold and got the on and off bit thinking the car temp may be an issue
The reason the AC system kicks on and off is because of this.
Then on a warm afternoon it was heaven and today it wasn't - just driving me crazy - and warm. SO thanks for your advice
When the ac system is stabilized and compressor is not running, it has just enough pressure to tell the pressure sensor to turn it on. Once the compressor comes on, it starts to cycle the freon through the system and then the pressure then lowers cause it's moving, that is when the pressure sensors says , hey, that is not enough pressure in the system and it will shut the AC off to try to protect the system.
Then when the freon stops circulating pressure starts to rise again.
So the AC comes on and goes off.
Normally a AC service of recovering the AC system and recharging it is around 130 bucks.
