"Service Engine Soon" light has been on for 4 years in my 2003 Pathfinder. Code 1450 Evap Canister. I have spent about $600 with various mechanics who supposedly "patched a leak" or tightened this or that but the light always comes on hours later or the next day. I bought a new Nissan gas cap 2 years ago. Also tried putting a plastic baggie underneath my gas cap. Ready to give up, but can't pass inspection. I am in Milwaukee, WI. Thanks.
Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com
Are you using a code reader to get this code?
Yes. Actually it was P1451. Sorry.
1 min please..
ok
sorry for the wait
You there?
Yes
let me look up that code. You sure it's no P1456?
are you using a code reader?
Darn it might br 1456. I don't have it in front of me right now. Yes I believe it is 1456.
Evap very small leak..
If you have a P1456 Evap very small leak, I believe I know the problem..
great
Where the vent control valve bolts on to the Evap canister, it cracks.
I have a image to show you
1 sec
It's a hair line crack
Will I be able to print this after I rate you?
That causes the Evap very small leak 90% of the time..
Sure
Just refresh the page to print
I have another canister picture, also
OK thanks. So as far as fixing, what needs to be replaced and how much (ball park number). I assume they can't fix the crack..
I forget which one is yours..1 sec, I will give that one to you also.
Normally you need to replace the canister and vent control valve to resolve.
The second image is for 2003 Pathfinder?
Either the first or second..
but that is the general location of where the crack is
The canister is around 220 bucks, and the vent control valve is around 150 or so.
Where can I buy the canister and vent control valve? Aftermarket online?
Hold on.. got more good info on that.
http://www.courtesyparts.com/default.php
This is a Nissan Dealer in Texas that sells Nissan parts online with out the dealer mark up.
Cool. What is the actual name for the canister that I should search for?
Contact them and they should be able to get what you need. Just make sure you have your vin number of your Pathfinder so they can get you the correct one.
Evap Canister, and Vent Control Valve
Got it. Would you suggest going to a Nissan dealer to install??
Or just neighborhood shop

Thats the valve
Your local repair shop should be able to put these parts in.
I would just get under the truck with a flash light and verify you have this crack on the canister before you order it
If you have this hair line crack, that is your very small leak
Well no matter what is causing the light to go on, replacing the whole canister should fix it, no?
Should I still call them with my VIN or are those links for sure for my 2003 Pathfinder?
If it has that crack, yeah replace it!
I would call to be sure your getting the correct one...
OK thanks.
they will ship to you.
Your welcome and thank you for using JustAnswer.com
Thanks Jay!
OK man just went to AutoZone to make sure I had the right codes. P1456 EVAP Control System, small leak detected. Also P0442 which reads the exact same as P1456. I am going to Midas for something else today and while they have the car up I will look for the hairline crack that you sent me images of. Sound right?
Sounds good!, those codes are for very small leak, and small leak. The crack on the canister is normally the problemLet me know how you make out. Thanks Jay
Is this the hairline crack?
Attachments are only available to registered users.
Thats the crack!!!
OK I ordered the canister and the valve from Courtesy Parts. How much do you think a Nissan dealer will charge me to install??? THANKS.
If the dealer does the work, it would be 1 hour labor. Thanks Jay!
