Customer Question

Hi. My wifes 2005 Nissan Pathfinder w/ 79K miles has developed a vibration that kicks in about 62 mph. The vibration can be felt in the steering wheel and is also audible. I originally assumed tires and sense we needed new, replaced with all new balanced tires/wheels. Still have vibration. Last weekend rebuilt front brakes, had rotors turned. Still have vibration. Any ideas?

Jay :

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com

Jay :

this noise or vibration.

Jay :

Does it sound like the rumble strips on the side of the highway?

Jay :

Let me know, Thanks Jay!

Customer :

Maybe, but a lower sound level. The vibration is side to side, becomes worse with speed.

Jay :

What is your exact mileage?

Jay :

This is important to know...

Customer :

79,800

Jay :

This could be the trans making this noise.

Jay :

There is a known issue on this

Jay :

You are going to need to have this checked asap, and I will explain

Customer :

Yikes. I have maybe read about this on-line and did check the transmission fluid for antifreeze I believe.

Jay :

\The 2005 through 2010 Nissan Pathfinder, Xttera and Frontier got a warranty extension on there Radiators. This extension is for 8 years or 80k miles. The reason for this extension is cause the trans cooler inside the radiators have been failing prematurely. When this happens coolant can enter the trans, and trans fluid can enter the coolant system. But when coolant enters the trans, it contaminates it. Once this problem start, you may feel a vibration at highway speeds. This vibration may resemble the rumble strips on the side of the highway. If you have this type of vibration, then your trans has been contaminated by the coolant. If your with in the 8 years or 80k miles Nissan will cover the transmission if it was damaged by the radiator, because the radiator is the cause of the condition or failure. So the radiator and trans would be replaced under warranty

Jay :

But your under 80k miles so if the trans is contaminated by the radiator failure, the trans would be replaced under warranty with the radiator.

Jay :

But your going to want to have this checked asap, since your close to the end of the warranty extention

Customer :

OK. Thanks. Would the antifreeze be visib

Jay :

It can make the trans fluid a pink color

Jay :

but before it actually does, it may not affect fluid visually.

Customer :

Would antifreeze be visible on the transmission oil dipstick. If I dropped the fluid and replaced, would that solve it temporarily and confirm? I will check it. Thank you.

Jay :

But this is some thing that I would go to the local dealer to have checked asap

Customer :

OK. Thanks.

Jay :

If the dealer doesn't find any problems like this, then at least you have it noted in the system

Jay :

So if this problem does get worse and does turn out to be the trans cooler issue and your out of warranty, they should honor the repair

Jay :

If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask. Thanks Jay!

Customer :

Hi Jay. I did take the Pathfinder to the local Nissan dealer. It was faulty ujoints in the front driveline. Thanks for the insight.

Jay :
