I have a Nissan '06 Frontier , standard trans., 4x4, 6 cylc. engine. Sometimes when I accelerate it chatters, like valve noise. What could be making this noise ?

Welcome to JA! I am Carguy1 and I will assist you today.Hi there! So, you are actually hearing a rapid tapping type of noise? Is the check engine light coming on when this happens?
No , I haven't noticed the light coming on.
Ok, it sounds like this might be something going on with the timing chains or the timing chain tensioners. This can cause a chattering or rapid clicking type of noise. With no check engine light coming on, it's likely a mechanical issue.Honestly it would probably be best to have the sound listened to locally to verify the concern. If it is the tensioners or chains, you need to have it addressed pretty quickly to prevent any engine damage. Also, check the oil level to be sure it's full. This is where I would start.

Should I go to the dealer ?
Well, I know folks don't like going to the dealer, but I think you should. This is a fairly common issue so they will be faster with diagnosis and the repair costs might even be less because they have the experience. They will also use factory parts on the truck which will be the most current, updated parts.
Could it be that I use 87% gas with 10% ethanol?
It is possible, depends on the actual sound. I don't think it would hurt to either use some octane booster, or try the higher octane fuel for a couple of tank fulls.I use the 10% methanol in my maxi, but I also use the premium grade fuel unless the station doesn't have it.I do notice a lack of power with the lower octane, so I think you could try it. This is why it's hard to diagnose noise online.
