tims auto repair :

hi

tims auto repair :

did you set the two top compression ring gaps at 180degrees of each other?

Customer:

yes

tims auto repair :

how much oil is it useing?

tims auto repair :

what grit did you hone the cylinders?

Customer:

we just started it up tonight and it is burning oil out the pipe. we took plugs out and there is oil on all 4 plugs.

Customer:

we ran it for about 1/2 hour.

tims auto repair :

does it smoke really bad?

Customer:

it will not go over 1800 rpm.

Customer:

no not real bad.

Customer:

it starts rattling we you give it more gas.

tims auto repair :

bottem or top end rattle?

Customer:

top end

tims auto repair :

ok

tims auto repair :

tell me...does it have allot of blow by from the oil cap....[crank case pressure]?

Customer:

it sounds like it is loading up with

Customer:

no not at all.

tims auto repair :

ok

Customer:

that looks normal.

tims auto repair :

ok

Customer:

it idles great.

tims auto repair :

does it rev well?

Customer:

no it does not. will not go above 1800rpm. with out rattling on the head.

Customer:

real bad.

tims auto repair :

ok,,,,i can give you a though here

tims auto repair :

i think you need to run it more

tims auto repair :

sometimes when you have the engine apart like this

tims auto repair :

the lifters[hydrolic] tappets will go down

Customer:

i build engines alot this is the first time i had trouble like this.

tims auto repair :

it may build up and quieten after the engine gets hot and the oil gets thin after a while

tims auto repair :

also

Customer:

i cut new rings with my ring filer. all at the lo end of the spec. even the oil ring.

tims auto repair :

depending on the honeing rocks used...

Customer:

i just took the glaze out of it.

tims auto repair :

i see

Customer:

i got .20" oversized rings and cut them to each cylinder.

tims auto repair :

i would think you used a hard chrome moly rings here

Customer:

yes.

tims auto repair :

ok

Customer:

could the block be bad.

tims auto repair :

it really needed to be honed rough

tims auto repair :

no

tims auto repair :

well it could...but i doubt it

Customer:

i did hone it rough.

tims auto repair :

no just the glaze?

Customer:

there was crosshatch pattern on the walls.

tims auto repair :

ok

Customer:

i made sure.

tims auto repair :

ok

tims auto repair :

it needed to be rough...

tims auto repair :

these rings are hard

Customer:

i used the flat rock stones for the hone.

tims auto repair :

if the cylinders are oval shaped any,,,it takes a while for the rings to cut the cylinders to fit

Customer:

should we keep the car and run it more.

tims auto repair :

yes

tims auto repair :

i think you need to run it though several run cycles

Customer:

you think the oil is coming up through the new rings.

tims auto repair :

the rings do not oil by the pump

Customer:

i know.

tims auto repair :

they are oil by the sling of the crank

Customer:

this engine has a oil balancer.

Customer:

i know.

tims auto repair :

i think you need to run it a littlemore before you worry

tims auto repair :

break it in a little

Customer:

how much more time.

Customer:

day,week,

tims auto repair :

week-

Customer:

an hour at a time.

tims auto repair :

the cylinders and the rings need to wear to fit each other

tims auto repair :

just drive it nomal

tims auto repair :

normal

tims auto repair :

the chrome moly rings are really hard

Customer:

it will not even go above 1800rpm.

tims auto repair :

i would advise against using any synthetic oil also

Customer:

you cant give it the gas at all. it loads up with oil.

tims auto repair :

??

Customer:

and starts to slow down and rattle real bad.

Customer:

we used 5w30 oil.

tims auto repair :

loads up with oil?

tims auto repair :

explain

Customer:

yes it slows down as you give it gas, and it rattles bad liek it will break.

Customer:

something on top of the engine, the valves.

tims auto repair :

do you have oil presure,,,oil getting to the top?

Customer:

yes plenty of oil on top.

tims auto repair :

ok

tims auto repair :

had the engine been really hot before the rebuild?

Customer:

no it did not over heat.

tims auto repair :

ok

Customer:

but i took it apart because it was really burning oil before.

tims auto repair :

ok

Customer:

smoke scream.

Customer:

scrrean

Customer:

real bad.

tims auto repair :

i see

Customer:

it is alot better. now but still burning oil.

tims auto repair :

are you sure the rattle isnt a rod?

Customer:

yes the rod we all out when i did the bearings and the rings. look ok.

tims auto repair :

ok,,all i can do is give you a though

tims auto repair :

thought

Customer:

i took all the plugs out and put a white piece of card board over the top of the plug holes, and cranked the engine, and all four plugs holes spit oil up.

tims auto repair :

but it doesnt smoke bad?

Customer:

not real bad but definatly oil.

Customer:

no not real bad. now.

Customer:

i never had this problem with engines i have done.

Customer:

this is a first.

Customer:

really.

tims auto repair :

ok..my thought is,,if it isnt a rod making the noise,,lets just start it and let it run,,,it needs to burn the oil out of the pipes, build up the lifters and seat the rings...........

tims auto repair :

then,,you will need to evaluate it after it has been run more

Customer:

that sounds good. you might be right.

tims auto repair :

this is what to try

Customer:

the plugs are slightly black.

tims auto repair :

yes

tims auto repair :
