On older vehicles with no electronics it was a popular trick to pull the battery cable off with the engine running to see if the alternator is charging. But on a vehicle with electronics it can destroy electronic control modules. Odds are you knocked a module that works with the lighting system. It isn't showing up in my info, the bad electronics might be in the switch, I will find out and let you know.

OK I just got a link from a contact I have, where you can download a full factory service manual for your car, it is public domain and there is no charge for the download. I will post a link below, go down to the third of fourth option, and look for 96 Sentra. When you download it, there will be several sections go to the EL (electrical) section, and then go to page 61. It shows no electronics so if you fried electronics it might be in the switch itself. I would recommend you unplug the switch, and if the lights go out the switch is likely fried. I will post a link HERE for the manual download. If you have any more questions I am here to help.
