My 89 Maxima with an A/T won't shift into reverse or overdrive. 1st into 2nd shifts at 3500-4000 RPM. What can be done on the vehicle?

Do yourself a favor and start with getting the codes read. It is a pain to do it manually, find a shop or dealer. I had a 90 that slipped on O/D and a trans shop told me I needed a new unit. I flushed and was about to get into checking the shift solenoids. I ran the codes and had a few. I have seen that before pointing to a bad module. I found a used one and boom, shifted like new. Car had 180k and was still going with oem trans.

good luck

Would this explain reverse not working as well? Would I do more damage by taking it into a shop like AAMCO or somewhere to have the codes read? I can't drive above 45 - 50 and can't reverse at all...

could have some effect, they do have electric solenoids that control fluid pressure for shifting and overdrive. You may have a bad tcm, harness or shift solenoid. TCM cost me 45$. Hope yours is cheap
