I have a 1988 Nissan D21 2.4 engine and had ahead gasket go

Resolved Question:

I have a 1988 Nissan D21 2.4 engine and had ahead gasket go bad. Replaced it and a few other things.
Now can't get the timing chain back on (missing by 1/8") How do I release the chain tensioner, with taking the motor all apart?

Hi, my name is XXXXX XXXXX must remove the tensioner from the engine, then install the chain, then install the tensioner, you cannot instakl the chain with the tensioner installed, would you like the procedure for this?

Notes

After removing timing chain, do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately because valves will hit piston head.

Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Drain coolant from radiator, being careful not to spill coolant on drive belts.
  3. Remove radiator.
  4. Remove cooling fan.
  5. Remove drive belts.
  6. Set No. 1 cylinder at top dead center (TDC) on its compression stroke.
  7. Remove power steering pump, idler pulley and power steering brackets.
  8. Remove compressor idler and crankshaft pulleys.
  9. Remove oil pump with pump drive spindle.
  10. Remove rocker cover.
  11. Remove oil pan as previously described.
  12. Remove front cover, being careful not to damage oil pan or cylinder head gaskets.
  13. Remove chain tensioner, being careful that spring does not fall into oil pan.
  14. Remove chain guides, timing chain and sprocket. After removing timing chain, do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately.
  15. Remove oil thrower, oil pump drive gear and crankshaft sprocket.

After removing timing chain, do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately because valves will hit piston head.

Installation

  1. Ensure No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of its compression stroke.
  2. Install crankshaft sprocket, oil pump drive gear and oil thrower, noting the following:
    1. Ensure mating marks of crankshaft sprocket face engine front.
    2. Install oil pump drive gear so that large chamfered inner faces rearward.
  1. Install camshaft sprocket and timing chain, noting the following.

  1. Set timing chain by aligning its mating marks with those of crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket, Fig. 17.
  2. Camshaft sprocket should be installed by fitting knock pin of camshaft into its No. 2 hole, Fig. 17, and No. 2 timing mark must also be used.
    1. Torque camshaft sprocket bolt to 87-116 ft. lbs.
    2. Install chain guide and chain guide tensioner, noting the following.
      1. Torque bolt to 4.3-7.2 ft. lbs.

      1. When installing chain guide, move chain guide in direction that gives strain to chain.

      1. Adjust protrusion of chain tensioner spindle to 0 mm with slack side of chain guide, Fig. 13.
    1. Apply sealant to upper and lower portions of front cover.
    2. Apply lithium grease to sealing lip of crankshaft oil seal.
    3. Install front cover, torquing M8 bolts to 7-12 ft. lbs. and M6 bolts to 2.9-7.2 ft. lbs.
    4. Apply suitable sealant to sealing point of cylinder head and install rubber plug.
    5. Install oil pan, torquing attaching bolts to 3.6-5.1 ft. lbs. on 1986-87 models, or 4.6-6.1 ft. lbs. on 1988 models.
    6. Install crankshaft pulley, torquing bolt to 87-116 ft. lbs.
    7. Install oil pump and distributor driving spindle in front cover, noting the following:
      1. Torque attaching bolts to 8-11 ft. lbs.
      2. Assemble oil pump and driving spindle, aligning driving spindle face with oil pump hole.
    1. Ensure No. 1 cylinder is set at TDC of its compression stroke and that distributor rotor is set at No. 1 cylinder spark position.
    2. Slowly rotate crankshaft to ensure pistons do not interfere with valves. Do not rotate crankshaft quickly or with force.
    3. Install, rocker cover, compressor idler pulley, power steering pump, idler pulley, power steering brackets, fan, pulley, drive belts and remaining parts.
