1999 Nissan pathfinder: running lights..fuse box for tail lights

Customer Question

Problem with running lights on a 1999 Nissan pathfinder. Is there a special fuse for the running tail lights? No marking in fuse box for tail lights. No dash lights as well or side marker lights. Is there an inline fuse other than the fuses in the fuse box?

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com

When a vehicle is equipped with DRL ( Daytime Running Lights ) that means just the head lights will come on during day driving, no tail lights. Tail lights are for night driving as well as head lights.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks Jay!

The running lights do not come on @ night either. Is there an inline fuse (outside the panel fuse box)? If so, where?
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
The parking lights do not come on? or the head lights? or both?

Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Yes, they come on. I just found a fuse box under the hood of the car. Could this be the key to the problem of no running lights?
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Yes I was going to say there is a fuse box under the hood, that contain fuses for lamps and other componets.

I would check the fuses, if one is blown, then that would be why they are not working.

Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Just checked tail light fuse under the hood - good.

Is there another fuse box somewhere or fuse link?
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
I am not sure what isn't working? The head lights? the Tail lights? the Dash lights? The DRL's. I asked once before what isn't working. Please give me some more detail, so I can give better direction.
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
No dash lights, no rear tail lights

Yes we have brake lights, head lights & turn signals
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Do you have front marker lights?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
No, they are not working.
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Ok, here is the fuse location, for the tail light circuit. Check to see if fuse is good. If good, you need to see if it's getting power. Do you have a test light? There are fusible links, but you would see more things not working. The dash lights come on as part of the parking lights. Lets just see if we can get them working first. graphic

My car does not have the same fuses as in the diagram. My fuses are big, square, 4 prong fuses (under the hood).
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Hmm, Then I may not have the information you need. I have the service manual for the 99 pathfinder and I do have wiring diagrams for the DRL's. Does what you are looking at look like this?<img src="/uploads/FixUrNissan/2008-09-02_202444_99_relay_box_under_hood.jpg" alt="graphic" />
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
New info!!! Just found more square, 4 prong fuses - in the inside regular fuse box (above the regular fuses) Three of these and they are good. But there 2 more 1" x 1/4" fuses under the inside fuse box. Do not understand the last info you gave us.
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Doh!! picture didn't go through. Let me send it again. Sorry!!graphic
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Still not like our box. Ours has labels of Anti-theft horn, Anti-theft headlights. It has more square fuses in it than the diagram (blue, brown, & black ones)
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Those are relays.. Does it look like this?graphic
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
YES!!!!
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Locate the First image that I said Doh! on, and the tail light fuse will be in there. Locate the fuse and tell me if it's good. This imagegraphic
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Yes, I located it and it is good.
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
Do you have a test light?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Yes
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
With the test light, Turn ignition on, and turn lights on, and check power through all fuses through the back part of the fuse. If you find power only on one side of the fuse, then remove and inpect fuse. It should be blown. Check all fuses and let me know what you find.graphic
Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Have done that and none are blown.

Below the interior fuse box, there are 2 plug-in 1" x 1/4" fusable links. There are 3 square ones like the ones under the hood (refer to previous diagram). What are these 2 plug-in fuses (below the interior fuse box)for?
Expert:  Jay replied 8 years ago.
You have power going through the tail lamp fuse? Bothsides? Witch plug in fuses are you refering to. The ones with the clear plastic top?
Customer: replied 8 years ago.

Sept. 7

Had to take the Nissan to a garage.

Problem solved!! Wire leading to a fuse burned out. The wire was under the fuse.

Thanks for trying!!
