Customer Question

Brakes on 2008 Infiniti are soft and spongy. Sometimes they go very low almost to the floor. Pads and rotors are in good condition. What are potential causes?

The most common cause of a spongy brake pedal is a bad master cylinder. The master cylinder will bypass internally making it difficult for the system to build up pressure.

The second more common cause is contaminated brake fluid. Contaminants such as water or air in the braking system all compress at a different rate from brake fluid. This causes you to need more brake force at the pedal to compress those contaminants before the brakes are then applied.

Do you hope to diagnose/repair it yourself?
