Infiniti QX4: ! Jay. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor

Customer Question

Hi! Jay. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Now the truck (Infiniti QX4 97) is going nuts. It is knocking/misfiring. I checked and double checked the wire. Not sure what the heck is going on.
It will take a few cranks to start, then it knocking. Can't touch the accelerator or it dies. It dies on its own also. Right before it does the 4x4 light come on.
There is no error code.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I did get a cylinder 3 misfire error, but it was running fine. I did some reading online and decided to replace the parts.
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
What brand spark plugs did you put in the engine?

oh god... ok.... You can't use Bosch Plugs in these trucks. These trucks engines are designed to use NGK spark plugs. Any other brand plugs, especially Bosch can cause the truck to run horrible and misfire like crazy. So you will need to put NGK's in as a First Step! After you do so, let me know how it's running and we can go on from there. Ok?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Huh. When I did this about 7 yrs back (don't drive much), I did with Bosch as well. Will replace with NGK and go from there.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I just double checked. The old spark plugs I just took out are Bosch Platinum. Its possible I have mis-wired the cylinders to the distributor. Would you be able to send me a diagram or pic so I can make sure that is correct.
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
Well you certainly don't want to run Bosch plugs in this engine. You want NGK's, That is what these engines were designed to use. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/105565483/98%20Path%20or%20QX4%20%20Firing%20order.jpg That link is a image of the firing order for you to check. If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask. Thanks Jay!

Will these spark plugs be fine?

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/105565483/1.jpg That link has the part numbers of the NGK plugs you need. You want to use the Standard type.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Put in the NGK BKR5ES-11 spark plugs. Double checked the wiring based on the diagram you sent. No luck. The engine will not fire. Cranked it for a good 30 sec 2-3 times.

The truck doesn't run? I thought it was hard to start and ran bad... Do you know if you have any codes?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Right, it was hard to start and ran bad. Now it will not start. The good news is (at least to me) that it is cranking smoothly. Before it would shake up even when I was cranking it.I did do a code check. Every thing is clean.
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
Did you do any other type of work other than the tune up? I would check the air intake duct from the throttle chamber to the air box and make sure there is no cracks in the tube and that it's seated properly around the throttle chamber. Let me know what you find..
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Nope no other work. Did the tune up and now this.I look check the air intake duck. Will also go ahead a replace the air filter.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Some where online I read that maybe the Crankshaft Sensor could have malfunctioned. Would be crazy if it malfunctions due to me doing the tune up, but how knows. Its a cheap part and I can replace it if is easy to get to. Do you think that might help?Don't want to keep throwing money at it, but do need to get this working in the next few days or will have to take it in.
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
Don't go throwing a Crank Sensor in the truck. They never go bad. Can you take a video clip on how it's running for me so I can see?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Here is the link to the videohttps://www.dropbox.com/s/j1n5cw7auscyvi9/VID_20150708_101844994.mp4?dl=0
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
Thank you .. I will check it out and get back to you. ok?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Jay, did you look at the video?
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
Yes, I was trying to see if the engine was shaking.. It's hard to tell.
Can you make another and get a little closer to the engine. Particularly the intake. I want to see if it looks like it's misfiring.
Sorry, I forgot to get back to you after seeing it.
Let me know..
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It fired up today, but still the same shaky behavior. Can't touch the gas or it flutters and stalls. Here are two videos.https://www.dropbox.com/s/p73o2yas27eomvn/VID_20150709_163926595.mp4?dl=0

Did you do a knock sensor on this truck by any chance?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Nope. Don't even know where that would be. Just the tune up stuff.
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
Before you did the tune up, you had a Misfire on cylinder 3 correct? It still ran a little ruff before the tune up?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Only once for about 1/2 mile. I could tell that one of the cylinders was not working. But then it cleared out when I was waiting at a traffic light. And I did the work the next day.I did a quick look and the knock sensor is very cheap. If it is easy to get to, then send me pics/diagram and I can replace it.
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
No the knock sensor is not easy. I asked about that cause I thought maybe you had some wires crossed. Lets check the wires you installed on your tune up and make sure they are in the right location on the cap. see link. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/105565483/98%20Path%20or%20QX4%20%20Firing%20order.jpg
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Yup the wires are connected properly. I had checked them when I got the diagram from you earlier. Here are a few pics showing the wires. Can't hurt for you to check up on me.https://www.dropbox.com/s/otv7v7p3vkb72ic/IMG_20150709_182726574.jpg?dl=0

Can you give me one close up distributor cap shot? Does the cap have cylinder number 1 stamped on it?
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
It looks right.. I would just like to see where number one starts on the cap.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Here are pics. I am starting from out and moving the camera closer without changing the angle or orientation.https://www.dropbox.com/s/w832mrvd3nngnp9/IMG_20150709_190334671.jpg?dl=0

I am starting to think you may have a distributor issue. Distributors can cause this issue and are fairly common to go due to time and age. Do you have codes now?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I did replace the cap and rotar. Are you thinking about replacing the complete unit?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008032N2W/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3RJ1V433V89MDWell what do you know. I finally did get a code. P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Not something I wanted to see, but was thinking might be. Had a similar issue with my wife's Volvo S70 last year. Fixed one thing that the cam sensor went out.So now what do you suggest. Try the distributor first or go straight to the cam sensor? How do I replace the cam sensor? Where is it located?
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
AHHH That is the info I need! The Cam Sensor is part of the Distributor assembly. So you will need to replace the Distributor assembly to resolve your issue! If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask. If not, and you're satisfied with my help, please Rate me. I hope I have provided you with Excellent Service. Thanks Jay!

Will the distributor below work?http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008032N2W/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3RJ1V433V89MD
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
That looks correct. I am not a fan of after market electrical parts, but I understand that dealer prices are very costly. Just keep in mind that After Market electrical parts don't always work and certainly don't last like the factory ones. Thanks Jay

Hey! Jay. Replaced the distributor. Did make sure that the rotor and distributor position are like the old one I took out.The engine is starting up, but is sluggish. Bit bouncy. If I let the RPM come down then it will stop. I can hear all the cylinders firing and in sequence. What do I do next?
Expert:  Jay replied 1 year ago.
Do you have a timing light.. Are you sure your not a tooth off?
