My 2001 infiniti qx4 runs very very loud. About a year and a half ago I was told by a dealer that this problem could be fixed by replacing the front converters for about $3100, but that it was a cosmetic issue that wasn't effecting the longevity of my car so I opted not to make the repair. it's over a year later and it's gotten progressively louder, especially on the highway, but seems to run just fine. Is the advice I've gotten true? Is the loud really just cosmetic or do I really need the expensive converter replacement to get my QX4 to last?
Hello and Thank you for using JustAnswer.comMost of the time what I have seen is the exhaust manifolds crack. Does it sound loud in the front or the rear of the truck?Let me know, Thanks Jay!
The sound is louder if you are sitting in the backseat. However, from the driver's seat it sounds like a sound from the engine.
Well I do know the tail pipe flanges go, but if it's from the engine area, I would look to have the exhaust manifolds check. If cracked, the noise would get louder and louder as time goes on, cause a crack just gets worse through time.If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask. Thanks Jay!
I will have it checked again but have had multiple services since the dealer recommended replacing the converters and none have found, or at least not mentioned an issue. How would this issue effect my car's longevity?
You mean if you leave it alone?
Yes.
Well if the crack gets worse, the exhause could suck in air, verses blow it out, which could damage the engine.
Ok, how expensive is a crack to repair usually? And why would I have been told the front converters needed replacing?
Sorry, it seems the site is having some issues. The manifold is about 240 bucks, and about 4 hours labor. If both are cracked, then your looking at around 7 hours labor to do both. The exhaust manifold bolts to the catt converters. If you have a Service Engine Soon light that indicates you need a catt converter, that is why they would say it. Other wise the crack my be between the manifold or the catt. It's hard to say exactly with out looking at the car. I am only telling you what I have seen that maybe your exhaust leak. Thanks Jay!
Thanks so much. I have a SES light but it seems to go on and off intermittently and anytime I take it to a regular servicing, they say the light doesn't seem to indicate a real issue and to make sure I click the gas cap closed enough times -- which I always do.
Well if it's a evap code that is turning on the Service Engine Soon light, I have seen where the evap canister cracks where the vent control valve mounts to it. So that could be the evap codes your getting and why they think it's a gas cap. Thanks Jay!
Ok thanks. Would a regular service station be able to check for the cracked manifold or do I need to take it to the dealer. I'm reluctant to go back to Infiniti given their original $3100 estimate.
Sure, any repair shop should be able to check it for you. You don't have to go to the dealer if you don't want to.Thanks Jay!
Thanks so much for your help.. will give you a great rating.
