Infiniti: 1999 q35 with 160,000 miles..Is this too many miles?

Resolved Question:

This question is for an Infiniti mechanic. My son is looking at a 1999 Q35 with 160,000 miles. Is this too many miles? He is looking to spend 8-9K. This car's asking price is 5K.
Are there certain years/ models of infiniti to steer clear of and what should he look for in a n older used infiniti

Jay :

Hello and Thank you for using JustAnswer.com

Jay :

5k is to much for that car. Is this a used car lot?

Jay :

The car in excellent condition is worth the most around 4100.

Jay :

Good condition 3700

Jay :

To be honest with you, this car with that many miles is going to require some work most likely and the parts are very expensive.

Jay :

Power Steering racks are known to go on these cars, and there could be many more things to worry about. I am not a big fan of the Q's, I never really liked them to be honest. The cost of repairs is crazy.

Jay :

For 8 to 9k, you can get something like a Maxima, or I35 that is a much better car than the Q

Jay :

If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask. Thanks Jay!

Customer : Thank you for your help. I thought the same about the Q. Are infinit parts expensivein general ? I thinkhe found an I 30 too. What is the maximum # XX miles he should consider ?
Jay :

Parts seem to be more expensive for the Q because of all it's control unit and electronics.

Jay :

The I30's the parts are much more reasonable and more parts are available after market

Jay :

The only thing you want to check on the I30's is the lower radiator supports rust away and can drop the cross member. That is one of the first things I would check

Jay :

If that is good, then I would look over the rest of the car.

Jay :

Check Engine Mounts, Trans fluid condition, filters, remove the oil cap and see if there is any sludge build up in the engine

Jay :

Check tire wear see if there is any uneven wear indicating something in the suspension

Jay :

and road test the car for any types of noises and performance issues.

Customer : Maximum mileage?
Jay :

I can't say, they can go for a long time.

Jay :

I have seen over 300k on these cars..

Jay :

But if your buddy has 8 to 9 to spends, I would look for something around the 100k mark..

Jay :

120k or less..

Jay :

Years 2000 to 2004

Jay :

Stay away from the 99 and below models, they had EGI harness problems

Customer : K. We have never had an Infiniti or know anyone who has owned one. So your advice is greatly appreciated. I don't know how u feel about Lexus. He is looking at RX 300, IS and ES models.
Customer : He maybe moving around a lot in the future. I was thinking a SUV would be more practical.
Jay :

I am a Nissan and Infiniti tech, I can't speak to much on Lexus, so I am not going to tell you anything I don't know.

Customer : I appreciate that. Of the cars you are familiar with, any other
Jay :

G35's are not to bad. Altima's in the 3.5 are good. If you look at a Altima with a 2.5 they had Catt Converter issues that would damage the engine. But I have a trick on that as long as it doesn't have a oil consumption issue, you remove the catt and put a exhaust header on the car with a rear 02 sensor spacer and then that car will run for ever.

Jay :

But that is if you looking at Nissans

Customer : Alright. Again Thank You do much for your advice. You have been most helpful.
Jay :

Your welcome and thank you for using JustAnswer.com

Jay :

Thanks Jay!
