after 3 years re bankruptcy expiry. Do I automatically become discharged or do I have to apply for dischargement

You will be automatically discharged. The only exception is where the Official Assignee in bankruptcy objects to your discharge, which only happens if you are doing something wrong, like trading on your own account or concealing assets or otherwise not cooperating with them. They must notify you if they object, but otherwise the bankruptcy will just come to an end and they will notify you of this.
