Is it possible to find out the reason a person was put in prison?

The criminal records of a person, which would show the nature of their convictions, are not available to the general public to search. The sentence would have been given in open court but unless you know the date, this would be hard to track down from court records. The only other possibility would be to see if this was reported in the paper.
