I am a self employed bus driver. I have not filed a tax return (company or personal) for several years. I have not paid any tax (other than GST) during this period. I wish to clear things up with the IRD. How should I proceed?

Hi Welcome to JustAnswer. My first response will follow shortly. Please feel free to follow up if anything is not clear
The first step is to prepare all the returns and find out how much you owe by way of personal and company tax. Inland Revenue always insist on this before you can negotiate any arrangement on the tax. If you are able to pay the tax, then you should file the returns and pay as much as you can. You should then contact them and ask to make an appointment in person, and explain any proposal to pay the rest of the tax. If you make voluntary disclosure they are able to treat you better under the Tax Administration Act and you may be able to negotiate penalties.
Thank you very much for your clear and prompt answer. It really helped a lot.
