If the median nerve is compresed t the neck, will it appear

Customer Question

If the median nerve is compresed t the neck, will it appear swollen at the carpal tunnel in the wrist? Im trying to figure out if the carpal tunnel pain is from the neck or wrist, a recent ultrasound showed the median nerve was moderately swollen at the wrist, could this be from the ligament compressing at the wrist or from the neck?

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Median nerve is formed at the the beginning of forearm by the union of nerve branches from the 5th, 6th and 8th Cervical spine nerve roots and 1st thoracic nerve root.
Swollen median nerve will be due to the compression at the wrist level.
Problem at the neck will not affect the median nerve directly.
Median can still get affected from neck problem like herniated cervical spine disc as it is formed from the nerve roots originating there.
Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
