Customer Question

About a month ago I developed sharp shooting pain in my lateral five, bilaterally or it happens just below my butt down to my knees bilaterally. This seems to be worse and by sitting for long periods. A couple of weeks agoI developed muscle spasms as well and sometimes get those with no movement. I thought this might be sciatica or herniated disc, but I am wondering because it is on both sides. Sometimes even my hands or feet will go numb

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Sharp shooting pain radiating down your buttock suggests the problem at the lower lumbar discs.

Spinal stenosis or narrowing of spinal canal can cause symptoms bilaterally since the compression of the nerve roots occur right at the origin.

Now there can be other possibilities as well like diabetes, thyroid disorder, vitamin B12 deficiency, autoimmune disorders.

Degenerative neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis also needs to be ruled out.

MRI scan of the spine, nerve conduction and EMG studies are strong recommended besides relevant blood tests.
Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
