Hi, I am Neuro Doctor, an American Board Certified Neurologist with vast clinical experience.
Did your doctors tell you what is causing the hip pain? Is it arthritis or something else?
Do you see any swelling of the left hip area?
Hi, I have posted couple of questions above, when your time permits please reply to me. I will go through your reply and then I may either ask few additional questions - if still more information is required about your health condition/severe refractory left hip pain, or if I already have obtained sufficient information from you then I will post my answer here at the earliest. And if I am already attending some other medical emergencies or answering other neurology questions at this site then there may be some delay in following up with you but I will definitely follow up with you at the earliest possible from my side.
I am going through these information
I will be with you shortly.
Okay I see
Is there any numb feeling or tingling feeling (pins & needle feeling) too in the hip area?
Hi please do not try to rate before we finish the discussion.
Let me answer your questions first then you can rate my answer.
Totally approximately for how long you have this pain?
Sorry there may be some time lag during exchange of information due to some technical glitch with the chat, I am actually answering you immediately after I receive your questions or replies.
Do you feel any tenderness in the hip area (severe pain or soreness on pressing the hip area)?
Have you had any hip related investigations done so far?
Does the pain extend to the thigh area too?
So you had no MRI scan or CAT scan or X ray of the hip, am I right?
Did you undergo any clinical examination by any doctors?
It sounds you actually felt it was from the muscle, could I ask you what made you to think so?
And are you an MD too?
I see your username contains MD that is why I am asking like this.
Okay I see, Thank you Dr! Okay sure we will discuss the possibilities, I will soon come to that.
I have received sufficient information from you, I will start discussing now the possibilities & treatment options.
You are welcome! Yes I fully agree this must be very handicapping you from your activities. And you mentioned ? my mother?
Okay I will now discuss the possibilities and the treatment options.
First of all this could be coming from the muscle too
A local muscle pathology can cause this
Some kind of muscle inflammation (local myositis) or some kind of structural abnormalities in the muscle can cause this pain.
And other possibilities include; Bursitis, or Tendonitis too
As your fried Dr had suspected
Although arthritis possibility is less likely based on your pattern of symptoms but it is a rare possibility too
So this could be from the muscle, from the bursa, from the tendon, or from the joint itself
An MRI of the hip can easily fetch the definitive diagnosis
MRI will show pathology in the muscle, bursa, or tendon, or the joint itself
So the most helpful investigation with your symptoms would be an MRI of the left hip
Once we get the final diagnosis appropriate treatment can be instituted
In the meantime;
Yes, please. You are very welcome!
Shall I recommend few treatment options too?
I will mention few treatments, I am not sure whether you already tried them or not
Lidoderm pain relieving skin patches
TENS is Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve stimulation
Either oral steroid course or Steroid shots to the hip area
Duloxetine is another choice for this type of severe pain
If you have not tried these then you may consider them
So you may consider Duloxetine or steroids
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
You are very welcome!
