Hi, this is Neuro Doctor, an American Board Certified Neurologist with vast clinical experience, and I am very glad to help you with your question.
How long you have these symptoms behind the knee joint?
Please answer my above question when you are ready.
Originally the swelling and pain would occur during work then stop. But past two weeks the swelling and pain are constant 24 hours a day.
Okay I see
Any other swelling anywhere else?
I hope you are not encountering any technical difficulties in replying me. I have asked a question above, please take your time.
Hi, could you see my above question?
No other swelling anywhere. Just behind my knees bil. Left knee swelling greater than right knee
Any history of Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis etc?
Any history of trauma or injury to the knees?
No When walking on stairs I do hear a clicking noise for about the past 7 weeks
Okay I see, and have you shown this to your clinic Dr? And any investigations already done?
No I live in Tampa,Fl. but I am on a Travel assignment in Miami,Fl for the past 7 weeks. My MD is in Tampa.
Okay I got it.
And have you tried anything else other than tylenol?
And do you have any history of fever, skin rash etc?
And any tick bite? and any possibility of Lyme arthritis?
Okay I got it, I will discuss now the possibilities and treatment plan;
There are many causes for this type of swelling and pain behind the knees;
The possibilities include as follows;
Popliteal cyst (Baker's cyst)
And many other kinds of knee joint conditions
Which may be due to some inflammation, or unusual infections etc
This need to be first properly investigated
you need a clinical examination ASAP
Then certain investigations as follows;\
X ray of knees
If needed later MRI of the knees
Blood tests as follows;
ESR, CRP, RA factor, ANA etc
The above approach will give us the exact diagnosis
Once final definitive diagnosis is made it will be treated appropriately
for example if this turns out to be Baker's cyst;
then steroid injections, aspiration of the fluid etc helps
if still this bothers then the cyst can be surgically excised
Similarly if other causes are identified they are appropriately treated
In the meantime you may try the following symptomatic treatments;
You may use some elastic tight stockings to the knees
this can help reduce the swelling
you may apply cold or ice compressors to reduce swelling
And if possible try to reduce physical activities that exacerbate the swelling
For pain you may try following if tylenol is not adequately helping;
Stronger prescription pain meds like Tramadol or Diclofenac
A course of oral steroid too may help
If pain is very severe then Tylenol#3 or Percocet, or Lortab etc
This needs to be shown in the clinic ASAP
And then investigations as pointed above
And then depending upon the investigation results the definitive treatment is instituted
I reassure you this does not sound like related to any serious condition and this should resolve eventually
So please try to undergo clinical & laboratory/radiological evaluations as discussed above as soon as possible
Please go through the above information and let me know if you have any further questions or if you want to discuss this further.
ok Thank you for your time.this information puts my mind at ease.
You are very welcome!
I once again reassure you this is most likely not related to any serious conditions.
Please show to your clinic Dr ASAP
I will do that. Have a good night
I wish you all the best! Good night.
