Hello,

I am a 60 year old woman who has had a tightened upper back all my life and sometimes it is very painful. I have asked several doctors about this and they say the noise I can make when I stretch the muscles is bone rubbing against bone but all they say is don't worry about it. What type of doctor do I go to for relief? Thank you.

KarayanMD :

Hi. Are you available to chat? I am a board certified neurologist in the U.S.

Customer:

yes - hello

KarayanMD :

Hi. Welcome.

KarayanMD :

I am sorry to hear about your back discomfort.

Customer:

thank you

KarayanMD :

What type of specialists have you seen?

Customer:

No specialists - just 3 GPs

KarayanMD :

I see. Well you have a couple options.

KarayanMD :

For this type of pain, I would consider having you see an orthopedic doctor first, if you want a more specialized look at your problem.

KarayanMD :

They may be more able to provide medications that would be helpful to you.

KarayanMD :

Have you tried different prescription medications?

Customer:

No, I am only told not to worry about it - but I know there must be something to help with the pain.

KarayanMD :

Yes there certainly are various antiinflammatories and even medications in other classes that can be helpful to keep you more comfortable.

Customer:

It helps a lot to know what type of doctor to go to....thank you.

KarayanMD :

I suggest seeing an orthopedic first, and if that doesn't get you the relief you need, perhaps a pain management specialist.

Customer:

Thank you so much.....at least I know who to see for help.
