I have found a hard lump behind my left ear. It is about the size of a marble and immaovable. It is right below the bone behind my ear. What could this be.

Dr Sathya :

Hi

Dr Sathya :

This is Dr Sathya and I am very glad to help you with your question.

Dr Sathya :

Is there any pain with it?

Dr Sathya :

I hope you are not encountering any technical problems in accessing this chat. Take your time.

Customer: Yes there is pain
Customer: Are you there
Customer: Hello
Dr Sathya :

Hi, I was already assisting another patient when this message from you got posted, I will follow up with you at the earliest, thanks!

Dr Sathya :

Okay I am back, service is extremely busy, and thanks for the waiting.

Dr Sathya :

Are you available for discussion now? Take your time.

Customer: Yes
Dr Sathya :

Okay good.

Dr Sathya :

Is the pain very severe or just mild?

Customer: Mild
Customer: But irritating
Dr Sathya :

any injuries or trauma to that area where the lump is located?

Customer: No
Dr Sathya :

for how long you have this?

Customer: I just noticed it a few days ago
Customer: I have huashi motors thyroid it's
Dr Sathya :

Okay I see, if you have to take a guess - was this probably sitting there for long time or do you feel possibly this happened very recently?

Customer: I'm sorry Hashimotos thyroiditis
Dr Sathya :

yes I got it, thanks

Dr Sathya :

hashimoto thyroiditis should not cause a lump near the ear.

Dr Sathya :

I had asked a question above, take your time.

Customer: Okay, I think it is a more recent thing
Dr Sathya :

okay I see, and any ear, throat infections or tonsillitis etc?

Customer: No
Dr Sathya :

Any other swellings anywhere else? any recent weight loss?

Customer: No
Dr Sathya :

Okay, I will discuss the possibilities now

Customer: Okay
Dr Sathya :

First of all if this came on recently this is less likely anything serious

Dr Sathya :

this could be some unusual type of infection related growth

Customer: I am concerned about lymphoma
Dr Sathya :

may be coming from mastoid bone (the bone you are mentioning)

Dr Sathya :

yes I see your points, I will explain

Dr Sathya :

That is why I asked any other swellings, growths

Dr Sathya :

but it doesn't look like any other swellings or growths

Customer: None that I have found
Dr Sathya :

just with one growth we cannot really conclude a tumor possibility

Dr Sathya :

of course you need a thorough clinical examination too

Customer: That is encouraging
Dr Sathya :

yes, definitely that you have found no other swelling is geat sign

Dr Sathya :

so this could be a local infectious process, or some other benign growth (non-cancerous)

Customer: I understand. Would you go to a general practioner for that or an ENT doctor
Dr Sathya :

ideally you may see an ENT

Customer: Okay
Dr Sathya :

because after the clinical examination they may need ear related scans too

Dr Sathya :

to get more info on this swelling

Dr Sathya :

to find out whether it is coming from mastoid antrum of the ear etc

Customer: Okay, would you recommend putting heat on it to help with the pain.
Dr Sathya :

yes you can definitely try hot or cold compressors on that area

Dr Sathya :

tab tylenol or advil is fine too

Customer: Okay, thank you
Dr Sathya :

You are welcome, I once again reassure you that most likely and hopefully this is not a cancerous growth, all the best!

Customer: It is really more annoying pain than throbbing pain
Dr Sathya :

Okay I see

Customer: Thank you,
Dr Sathya :

the annoying feeling should respond to heat or cold

Dr Sathya :

You are welcome, all the best!

Customer: Great,
Customer: I appreciate your response
Dr Sathya :

I once again wish you all the best!

Customer: Good night
Dr Sathya :

I am glad to be of help!

Dr Sathya :

Good night
