cerebral microvascular white matter changes are common in people over 50, both in otherwise healthy ones and those who have elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, etc.when atherosclerosis occurs in large arteries it leads to plaques that can cause a big stroke. when similar process occurs in small arteries of the brain, you see scattered "chronic micro vascular ischemia" changes on brain MRI.healthy lifestyle with diet rich in vegetables, fruits, fish, lean meats and whole grains and good blood pressure control are the ways to delay the progression of these changes.
