Information Systems are More than Just Computers

What is a computer? Various definitions exist, including:

An electronic, digital device that stores and processes information.
members.tripod.com/~rvbelzen/c128sg/glossary.htm
An electronic device that has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data, and can be programmed with instructions that it remembers.
javaworkshop.sourceforge.net/glossary.html
A programmable machine that inputs, processes and outputs data.
education.jlab.org/beamsactivity/6thgrade/vocabulary/index.html
A "computer" is defined for Current Population Surveys as a personal or home workstation having a typewriter-like keyboard connected to a laptop computer, mini-computer, or mainframe computer.
www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/fttn99/glossary.html
Essentially, a computer is a machine. An information system, on the other hand, is anything but a machine. So what is an information system?

An organized collection, storage, and presentation system of data and other knowledge for decision making, progress reporting, and for planning and evaluation of programs.
www.ojp.usdoj.gov/BJA/evaluation/glossary/glossary_i.htm
A structured set of processes, people, and equipment for converting data into information.
www.fao.org/DOCREP/003/X2465E/x2465e0h.htm
An information system is the arrangement of people, data, processes, presentation of data, and information technology that supports our everyday needs.
www.tech.purdue.edu/southbend/academics/degreeprograms/cit/cit_term.cfm
As you can see, an information system requires far more than basic data being input into a computer. Data and information are stored in a computer, but the relationship between and analysis of the data and information requires an information system. For example, as the diagram below demonstrates, data that is captured in a computer system can be translated into meaningful information through the use of an information system. Raw data from a supermarket checkout counter can be processed and organized to produce meaningful information, such as the total unit sales of dish detergent or the total sales revenue from dish detergent for a specific store or sales territory.

Although this is a very simple example of the impact of an information system, it gives us the general idea. Before data can become useful to the organization and its management, the data must be arranged in such a way that it can be analyzed and reported against. In order to know how to configure the information and provide the required analysis, a company must understand its specific needs.

Using information systems effectively requires an understanding of the organization, management, and information technology shaping the systems. Strategic business objectives of the organization must also be defined. By so doing, information systems can be designed to support the achievement of operational excellence; the ability to rapidly launch new products, services, and business models; customer and supplier intimacy; improved decision making; and achieving a distinct competitive advantage.

An information system creates value for the firm as an organizational and management solution to challenges posed by the environment. This environment is a complex two-way relationship mediated by many factors, not the least of which are the decisions made—or not made—by managers. Other factors mediating the relationship include the organizational culture, structure, politics, business processes, and environment.

Information systems are transforming the way we do business, opening the doors to e-commerce, providing globalization opportunities, and leading to the emergence of the digital firm. From data management that is as simple as the organization of information at the checkout counter to elaborate customer-relationship management systems that track, analyze, and report on the specific nature of each individual customer, information systems have a key role.

Hello,
Well, I can do these essays. Hope all are not due simultaneously.
I got all essays, but just to keep track of work, I would like you to post the essays one by one. I will answer one essay then you post second.

So, please post just one essay I have to write now along with deadline.
