I have 2008 Ultra classic, completely stock, starter has been making grinding noise, now free spins and will not engage the motor. I am reading about SE c
JA: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?
Customer: compensator, might I have two issues?
JA: Are you fixing your Classic yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Starter drive area, about one year, I have 50,000 miles
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

the starter cannot energize unless it engages the engine.

the problem you have is, your starter clutch is bad. the grinding noise you had was notice it was failing.

I recommend, if doing that, you also consider rebuilding the solenoid and replacing the brushes in the motor.
