2001 wide glide. had mini tach installed at time of

Customer Question

2001 wide glide . had mini tach installed at time of purchase. Lately the tach flutters slightly at idle, and gets progressively worse till at 5000 and up it fluttersv wildly. Since the tach signal comes from the ignition, i suspected it first. Also, the ground from tach to chassis is good. any other possibilities? Is it possible to test the ignition?
JA: How many miles are on the car? What size is the engine?
Customer: 2001 harley wide glide 34000 milees. TC_88 engine
JA: Are you fixing your MINI yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: All ive done so far is to check the wiring. No broken wires. Bad coil possible?
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Had a very rough idle since purchased. smoothes out between 2500 and 3000 rpm. had it back to dealer 3 times in first two months. nothing solved. ithink that if these young kids dont get a trouble code they are lost.

I suspect the filtering inside the tach.

it's actually very good that it lasted this long.

it could be a problem with the wiring between the tach and the ignition, but I suspect the tach itself.
