Customer Question

i have a 2001 Honda Goldwing, about 72k miles on it, after the bike heats up driving around the neighborhood at about 99 degrees it starts to surge badly where the rpm's drop down to 700 rpm's then back to 1000 rpms then shuts itself off at the stop sign or red light. I have to rev up the throttle to keep it running or it will shut off, but starts up immediately. I'm afraid to go far since i know it will begin to surge and have to limp my way back home.

Hi Willie, I’m Louie. Sorry you had to wait awhile but I’ll do my best to help.

Initially, immediately but carefully check if the sparks are present and consistent when the symptom shows up again. If yes sparks present, then it would appear to be a fuel delivery/starvation issue. Proposed preliminary checks (if have not been done):

  • • drain-clean tank and replace with fresh fuel (even if just to eliminate as a suspect);
  • • manually vent tank by partially opening the gas cap;
  • • check/clean fuel path (least likely);
  • • check/clean the injectors (likely);
  • • test fuel pump output pressure when hot (most likely).
