It's my son's Harley softtail. I just put a new battery in

Customer Question

It's my son's Harley softtail. I just put a new battery in it this morning and it won't start, no lights, nothing. I've got it hooked up to a charger that indicates between 60-70% charge, but nothing. The buyer is picking up today.
JA: Just to clarify, what are the exact lights you're talking about?
Customer: No blinkers, no headlight, no horn, nothing...
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I replaced the battery. The bike started fine a few days ago after being overnight on a trickle charger, but didn't hold the charge and was dead this morning.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: No, I think that's it.

it seems like something associated with the battery. some batteries require an overnight charge before use. I can help you with this, but I'm going to need more information.

measure the battery terminal voltage under the following conditions with NO charger connected:

- ignition OFF

- ignition ON.

- with the start button depressed.

let me know what you find.

Steve, I'm an idiot. I failed to hook up one of the main cables, so I had part of the trickle cable and one main cable, but no true circuit. The bike now starts.
