My 95 softail was running fine, now at 4th hear or 5th gear

Customer Question

My 95 softail was running fine, now at 4th hear or 5th gear 60 mph is all it can muster. It does not miss and starts and idles. High hear it seems like a boat motor straining under load. Had it happen before and shop put a vacuum slide diaphragm in it and that fixed it.I replaced that and there was no change. Advice appreciated.

did you perform any maintenance or add any accessories before this started?

tell me everything you can.

Steve l had done no maintenance or added anything. Was riding and it was doing fine. I stopped for about 10 min. And when I took back off it had normal power till I hit 4th hear and then it would not gain much RPM s just go about
60 on level ground. Will revert up good when not pulling.

there are a few things that can cause a loss of performance.

it's best to go through them in a logical order.

we should start with the electrical system. battery and charging system.

- measure the battery voltage under the following conditions:

- ignition OFF

- ignition ON

with the start button depressed

- with the engine at 2,000 rpm (fast idle).

let me know what you find.

Carb is off bike , but voltage is switch off 12.5 ,. Switch on 12.2, start switch on 8.8 to 11.2 . Bike has set two months . Last time I rode it had good charge read 12.8 switch off.

you may have been misled.

this is not forum where we suppose what might be wrong with your bike.

this is a site where you contract to pay an expert (me) to help you diagnose and correct the problem with your bike.

your engine will need to assembled and operational to continue.

but since the carb is off, you can perform a compression test now, as it requires wide open throttle for accurate results.

contact me when that is done. we can continue then.
