It's a scooter. Can you help?
JA: Sometimes things that you think will be really complicated end up being easy to fix. The Mechanic I'm going to connect you with knows all the tricks and shortcuts. What kind of car is it? Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chrysler, etc.
Customer: Honda scooter
JA: Got it. What model and year?
Customer: 1980s honda helix I think

Customer: My scooter is not getting fuel it starts with starting fluid but after that nothing I think this problem is the fuel pump

Customer: Can I simply remove the fuel pump and just let it be a gravity drip?

Initially, bear with us; re-confirm and post back with the complete model number of the Helix.

Still, the description of "...starts with starting fluid but after that nothing..." could possibly be a fuel delivery issue (most likely) and/or ignition related (least likely). Based on this but with the above background information missing, proposed preliminary tries (if have not been done):

  • • test for presence and consistency of spark;
  • • determine burn color of spark plug tip;
  • • drain and replace fuel;
  • • re-check / re-clean the fuel path;
  • • ensure vacuum integrity at the intake manifold;
  • • check the air box and air filter/element;
  • - ensure tight/correct fit;
  • - verify air entry is only through the designated opening.

While the "...remove the fuel pump and just let it be a gravity drip..." would be dependent on:

  • • displacement of the engine/carb requirement;
  • • which pump version, vacuum or electrical;
  • • safety concerns as the fuel pump is designed to work only with the ignition on or engine running.
