2005 king quad with gremlins. 1. fan runs way more than others

Customer Question

2005 king quad with gremlins. 1. fan runs way more than others the same year. 2. cranks over slower than others. 3. after riding for awhile, sometimes shuts off and hard to start.
today it ran about 20 minutes, shut off and wont re-start. FI light on and red temp light on.
when problems started last year, dealership adjusted valves and replaced battery. problem continues.
I will check codes tomorrow to see what it shows.
Any other suggestions?

Hi Daniel and welcome to JustAnswer,Thank you for the question and your patience. Should you still need assistance for information purposes only...Initially, proposed preliminary checks (if have not been done):• check/fill all fluid levels;• ensure no/flush potential air pockets in the coolant system;• inspect/clean the radiator fins for debris, mud, dirt or anything out of the ordinary;• test the thermostat or if comfortable with, run with the thermostat temporarily removed for test purposes;• run a compression check;• or better yet, a leak down test.

to retrieve codes, which wires do I jump on diagnostic plug?
Expert:  Louie replied 10 months ago.
Make use a short length of jumper wire to set the ECU into service mode. Locate the white dealer service 6-pin connector under the seat with a black cap. One side would have only 1 wire to a pin paired to an empty (no wire) pin. On the other hand, the other side would have 2 wires that needed to be jumped to set ECU into dealer mode.

shows ignition coil code
Expert:  Louie replied 9 months ago.
Test on the ignition coil using a multi-meter:• primary winding 0.1 ~ 0.6 Ω;• secondary winding 12k ~ 19k Ω.
Customer: replied 9 months ago.
coil test good: 0.6 14.48
Expert:  Louie replied 9 months ago.
Additional tests on the ignition coil using a multi-meter:• pulsating high voltage on the white/black wire to the ignition coil from the ECM;• black/white wire is tied to a good ground.Another possibility would be that the ignition coil overheats after some time and its electrical characteristics drastically changes.

what numbers am I looking for in this test and what setting for the multimeter?
Expert:  Louie replied 9 months ago.
Please set the multi-meter to DCV and a low range; say 20. The expected pulsing voltage when attempting to start would be something like 0-12-0-12...0-12-0-12...
Customer: replied 9 months ago.
pulsing voltage is around 5.04-5.12.
Expert:  Louie replied 9 months ago.
Low but should still fire and engine run. With the above described symptoms of "... 1. fan runs way more than others the same year. 2. cranks over slower than others. 3. after riding for awhile, sometimes shuts off and hard to start....", all 3 could either be an engine issue and/or the battery + charging system. Please determine the battery voltage with ignition OFF, then when just switched ON and then again when trying to start.Additionally with a fully charged battery but the regulator temporarily disconnected, try the King Quad and note if any/all of the symptom(s) would persist.

I replaced the coil. Still no spark. Battery tested good. 5.6v to coil
Expert:  Louie replied 9 months ago.
Please re-check: • would there be spark (even weakly and/or once) when turning ON, then OFF then ON again the ignition switch (quickly);• does the "... pulsing voltage is around 5.04-5.12..." reaches nearly 0 before pulsing high;• using the old ignition coil, temporarily disconnect the white/black wire to the ignition coil from the ECM;• in its place, briefly/quickly touch this terminal of the ignition coil to the battery's + terminal usin g a length of wire and note if there would be spark at the spark plug.
