1983 Suzuki a100. I just bought this bike. It has 17,000 Ks

Customer Question

1983 Suzuki a100.
I just bought this bike. It has 17,000 Ks on it and has not been used since 1985. I put petrol and a new 6 volt battery in it and found that all the bulbs were burnt out and no spark at the spark plug when held against the cylinder. I have replaced the bulbs and found that the head and tail lights don't work, also the ignition and neutral lights do not come on. The horn and stop light works. Still no spark.
I am a retired car mechanic with no experience on two stroke motors. I find these strange symptoms very frustrating. Please help.
ignition and neutral lights still wont work. The horn and stop light work

Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

Thank you for the question and your patience. Should you still need assistance for information purposes only...

Initially and to my recollection on a Suzuki A100, the ignition/spark would work even if no battery and/or the lighting/electrical has problems. Hence, the described symptoms of "...no spark...lights do not come on..." are two (2) separate issues and therefore does not necessarily affect each other.

For the ignition/spark, proposed preliminary check (if have not been done) on the:

  • • magneto's ignition winding, contact point (breaker) and condenser;
  • • ignition coil;
  • • ignition switch
  • • ignition kill wire.

And for the neutral light, please check (also if have not been done) the:

  • • neutral switch at the magneto area;
  • • wiring from the neutral switch to the neutral indicator;
  • • IGN+6V at the other wire of the neutral indicator;
  • • engine and chassis grounds.
