Initially, possible suspects are:

  • • starter clutch / 1-way bearing (least likely);
  • • START button switch (likely);
  • • pitting contacts of the starter relay (most likely).

Proposed preliminary try would be to check or better yet, replace the starter relay. To locate the starter relay, start by following the big cable from the + terminal of the battery as it always ends up tied to 1 of the 2 big terminals of the starter relay. Replacement would then serve as both an attempt of a fix and as a test by process of elimination. The starter relay would be something like the part shown HERE.
