My negative ground connection broke so I bought a new cable

Customer Question

My negative ground connection broke so I bought a new cable and put it on. I charged the battery, and everything turns on wen I turn the key, but when I try to start it, it just clicks really loudly. Any idea?

that is he symptom for a bad battery.

you are hearing the solenoid pull in, but as soon as it engages the starter motor, he drop in voltage causes the solenoid to drop out.

to be sure, we should check te battery before doing anything else.

measure the battery voltage under the following conditions:

- ignition OFF.

- ignition ON.

- with the start button depressed.

we can continue then.

What if I don't have a meter?
Expert:  Steve replied 1 year ago.

meters are cheap. you can get a nice digital multimeter for around $50. it's a nice tool to have.

otherwise, if the battery is more than a few years old, replace it.

if the battery is new, have a LOAD TEST performed.

- if it fails the load test, replace it.

- if it passes the load test, replace the starter.
