I have a 2008 Honda Rebel and it's started when you give it gas it just revs up and takes a minute to catch and go, does every time you change gears what could be wrong?

Initially, proposed preliminary attempt (if have not been tried) is to check/adjust the free play of the clutch lever and/or lessen the slack at the clutch cable end.
