I own four Yamaha XS1100s. One has a tendency to stick in neutral

Customer Question

i own four Yamaha XS1100s. One has a tendency to stick in neutral from 1st gear to 2nd at high rpm. Another will skip in 1st gear and in 2nd under full throttle. It doesn't come out of gear, it just thumps. it seems I have some transmission work to do. What is the normal cost for doing these repairs and what needs to be done?

It will be difficult to estimate without knowing what the problem orthe damage is. The first bike sounds like it might haveeither a problem in the shifter assembly in the outer caseor a problem with a worn shift drum slot inside the transmission. The second bike might be having problems in the clutch ratherthan the transmission. It might be the clutch that is thumpingor in extreme cases the middle drive unit may have a springloaded cam that slips and could make that noise. It is made that way to protect the drive train from damage. The cost depends on the labour charge and whatever partsare used. Also the hours will depend on what is wrongafter checking out the shifter assy on the first bikeand the clutch on the other. The transmission would be a high hour repair due toremoving the engine and splitting the engine cases. So labour could be a few hours up to a day or two of work.Is there any other info you need?----
