Welcome,

Remove the timing plug from the engine
and insert clear plastic timing plug
if you have otherwise oil will spray.
Connect a timing light and idle the engine at
about 1000 rpm. Two dots should appear
in the center of the timing hole.
If not the timing plate sensor has to be adjusted
but often has rivets holding it on which need
to be drilled out before you can adjust the timing
plate.
Let me know if you need more info.

actually, you need to rev the engine to around 2000 rpm and look for the front cylinder advance mark.the 35 degree advance mark is the single dot. the 20 degree advance mark (2 dots) is not to be used. if you have an aftermarket ignition, most have a static timing procedure to allow you to set the timing with the engine off.you should check it with a timing light when you're done, but checking is a lot easier than setting. let me know if you need more help.Steve
