My VZ800 Marauder was not charging. So I replaced the generator coil. The Part is from ricks. This involves cutting the wires at the connector and pulling them through the gromit and then using the connector they provided replace it. (leaving the original Magnetic pickup) I did remove a black relay to make it easier to get to the connectors and reinstalled when finished Once together I started it. It did not start. What I have done so far: Checked resistance with the Magnetic pickup, 280 Ohms Checked for electricity going to the plugs, There is Made sure the tank is full Took back apart the generator cover and make sure with photos online that everything was where it was suppose to be. Any ideas?
Optional Information: Year: 2003 Make: Suzuki Model: Marauder Engine: 800 Already Tried: In the service manuel it says to not just measure the ohms of the Magnetic Pick up but to also look at peak voltage... They had a Special Service Tool to do this that I do not have... I did try to see if it hit 1.5 volts just with my DVOM but it didn't come close... Anyone think the part could be bad?
Hello how are you
I am good just a little frustrated.... Thought i would try this
So the bike was running just not charging before all of this correct?
\
correct
Does it have spark now?
I have not pulled the plugs... But it does have electricity going to it.
I pulled the wires
I would check for the presence of spark at this point.
I dont remember the exact readings but the pick up looks like its good
yeah... I have it in my minds eye that when I pulled it apart the pickup was backwards but the just does not make since
I need to go buy another gasket before I go and test for spark
Did you rip the old one
yeah... and the new one pulling it off and on so much.
But that isn't an issue it was like 11 bucks for the gasket
You can still put it back on for testing purposes
I know just don't want to pull it off one more time lol... So if I pull one of the plugs out and it has spark.... Then what?
Then we know the issue is not the pick up or your wiring job, and we can move forward with the diagnosing process
FYI there were times, after turning it over several times that it would make one attempt to start. As if there was fuel in the combustion chamber and the spark ignited it
Thats a good thing
How long has the bike been sitting
It happens only like on the beginning stroke but then just turns over.... Now it has been sitting for some time but the time period between doing the initial repair is like a day
How long since it last ran
Is the magnetic pickup like a crankshaft position sensor? Ummm last week
It function is to tell the coil when to spark. The sensor is not adjustable so at this point i do not believe the timing is off
I turned it over so much I used a car battery... With stopping in between in order to give the starter a break.... But my battery was not handling it
Ok so it is.
Yes depending on the application we are talking about
Lets confirm you do have spark and that it is bright blue in color
ok... how do I exit and come back w/o paying? Do I click on the save & Exit link below?
You can rate my answer and come back with follow up questions. I will work with you until we get you back up and running again
ok...
Keep me posted
How do I get back? They didn't give me any screen name or password.
You should find a link back to this question in your email. Just in case here is a link

Good luck
Thanks talk to you later

I checked the spark and it is nice and blue... I replaced the plugs in since they were out...
Were the plugs fouled?
yes they were fouled. In need of replacement
Ok you will need to check for spark with a new set of plugs, if the plugs are fouled they will not spark.
I replaced the plugs and checked it
Ok so now we have spark but the engine will not start. As i mentioned before the timing is not adjustable so we can rule that out. On the bottom of the carbs you will find a drain screw, crack these screws loose, this will tell us if they are getting as well as drain out any that may have gone bad during the repair process.
Ok... I will... It will take awhile because they are buried and both carbs are on opposing sides of the engine.
I know its a pain, might be a good idea to catch the gas that drains out just to see what was in there.
How much do you want me to drain out?
All of it
I don't know if you forgot or not we put fresh gas in it not too long ago... I am thinking right before I signed on using this.... From Shell...
The fresh gas is in the tank, if the bike has not run, and the carbs were not drained, the fuel in the bowls is not fresh.
How much fuel in the bowls?... I have a full tank.
Turn the petcock to the off position and drain only whats in the bowls. The bowls hold about 1/2 cup of fuel or less
ok... I will do that...
Try to catch what comes out in a clean container
ok
