Customer Question

I have an '03 FXSTBI w/97K miles on it. Last night noticed that the starter "sounded" different hen when stopped at an ATM later bike wouldn't restart. Ignition switch On, Run switch to Run pressing start switch and nothing happens. Pushed, 3-4 steps and fired to life. Replaced Starter Relay this afternoon and no help same response, absolutely nothing.

Welcome. Thank you for choosing Just Answer.

when you say bike doesn't start, please explain.
- does the starter crank the engine over, but the engine does not fire?
- does the starter fail to crank the engine?
- does the starter make any noise on the occasions it doesn't start?
- do you hear a solid "clunk"?
- do you hear anything?
- how old is your battery?

please tell me everything you can.

Steve,

The the starter doesn't engage at all. The only thing that I can hear, earlier today, seat removed, just replaced the Starter Relay and when start switch pressed I could hear a faint click each time I pressed the start switch though had to listen very closely. I have replaced the batery once in 97K miles and that was about 4 years ago. Perhaps not enough power to push the starter?

if you have a multimeter we can perform a few simple voltage measurements to determine the battery condition.

there is a test to determine if the starter itself is bad, once we know the battery condition.

do you have a multimeter or can you borrow or buy one?

let me know,
Steve

Can get one from neighbor in the morning or buy one....will likely need it again.

they just changed how things work.
you should either see an ACCEPT button, or have the ability to leave a RATING. if you leave a negative rating, the site will direct you to ask for more information until you are satisfied with my answer. if you leave a positive rating, the question will be closed and you will receive no further emails.
