After replacing my belt on my 2000 FXDWG, my starter began engaging after the engine was running. Makes a loud noise for a while, and then resets itself. It may engage briefly while riding. Any ideas?
While riding, the starter will engage. It won't be a "Hard" Engage, sounds like the starter piston is just touching the flywheel. then it will reset. It may come back from time to time. Short term fix is to shut the motor and restart, but does not fix it for long. After warmup, the bike runs fine with little or no issues.

Good day and welcome to Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXX I'd be happy to help you with your problem today.
That happens in a few different situations, let me ask you, do you have stock hand controls & switches?
What is not stock on the bike?
Is that the OE starter?
The starter is original. The only non stock items on the bike are the pipes, V&H Longshots and Screaming Eagle Air Cleaner Both Installed in 2000. Bike has just under 50K miles. Been garaged and serviced by "professionals".
Thanks for the info.
That happens when either the start button or start button wiring has a short, or your starter relay is sticking. I also see the the starter relay plugs melt & the spades short, shorting the relay engaging the starter. Can you find the starter relay?
I have an HD Service Manual on the bike and will locate the relay. Just 2.5 months ago my technicial replaced the jackshaft seal ($7.35) PN12066A and Jackshaft Assy ($215548) PN215548.
Those are sort of related but not the cause of your issue. I'd try a new starter relay first. Then we'll address the starter if needed.
hmm your reply did not post, could you try that again, please. thanks
Program sucks
Will get Relay
this thursday
Now I think I learned how to use this chat. Need to hit the enter key, not the reply button to submit comments.
It may take time to realize if the relay worked. Do I rate now or wait a few days/weeks?
Either way.
Keep in mind that since I can't see, touch or hear your bike, I'm going based on what you tell me. The relay may or may not be your issue.
I completely understand. Let's start inexpensive and work our way up. Either way, I am serious about getting this problem solved. Thank you
Excellent, thank you.
The relay did not solve the problem.
