I've got a 2007 Buell Lightning XB12Ss that has an electrical issue. With ignition switch on, everything seems fine, but when I turn the engine stop switch on, the check engine light will not illuminate, the dash lights all flicker as does the hi beam indicator and oil pressure light (and neutral light.) The only response from a start attempt is a chattering from one or more of the relays in the fuse box. I've swapped around the relays in every possible configuration with no change. Is this a bad ecm? A bad relay? A short somewhere? A bad switch? The flashing is rapid and seems in a continuous pattern. The battery checked out all good. Help!
Optional Information: Year: 2007 Make: Buell Model: Lightning XB12sS Engine: 1203cc Already Tried: Wiggling every wire I can get my fingers on, Swapping relays, battery check.
Hi, Welcome to JustAnswer. How old is the battery? Do you have a multi-meter?
I don't know the age of the battery but had a voltage and load test on it and both were good. Yes I do have a multimeter.
Check the battery connections at both ends. Check the frame grounds(underneath seat on side frame). Can you give me voltage readings on the battery, key off, key on and while pressing the start button? Thanks, Andre.
It's not a digital meter, but batt voltage looks to 12.5 power off, 12.1 with ignition on and still 12.1 with starter switch engaged (just a vibration from one of the relays.)
Are the battery connections and frame grounds clean and tight?
They appear to be. Are there only two ground bolts? I see one on the left and one on the right frame under the seat.
I removed and cleaned all four connection points and reattached the cables and connectors. It seems to have solved the problem! Now the engine starts normally. However, when ignition is turned on with the kill switch on, the check engine light still will not illuminate. There is nothing I can do to get the light to illuminate. Will this ever cause a problem?
It could just be that the indicator bulb is burnt. It won't cause any problems, just that you won't be notified if a trouble code comes up.
