Welcome. Thank you for choosing Just Answer.

Hi Jim,

you cannot mistake the head gaskets for base gaskets.......they only go one way and neither will fit in the wrong place.

the paper gasket is the base gasket, the copper gasket is the head gasket. some kits come with extra gaskets and that sounds like the case.

turn the jugs upside down and fit the paper gaskets. chose the two that fit the pattern of the bottom of the cylinder where all bolt holes line up, then flip the cylinders right side up and choose the head gasket that fits each cylinder. I would try the thin head gaskets first, then after the cylinders are assembled and the cams/pushrods/rocker covers installed and timed, roll the engine slowly to check there is no mechanical contact of the valves and pistons. you will have to clay the pistons to determine the exact clearance. the thick gaskets are more for high compression pistons but will hurt nothing to install them.

let me know if you need more help.

Steve
