My 1997 Honda Trx 250 recon 4 wheeler, the starter will not

Customer Question

My 1997 Honda Trx 250 recon 4 wheeler, the starter will not work sometimes, just clicks, but
if I put it in gear and rock it sometimes the starter will work, sometimes, if I put it in reverse and back to nuetrual, it will start, could it be the ignition safety switch in the transmission?

Hi, and thank you for letting me try and assist you with your problem.
That sounds like the neutral safety switch.
It's on the rear crankcase cover towards the bottom
The part number is 35600-HA0-003
It sells for about $14.00
Click Here for a diagram of it. It's #7

Is this switch something I can replace myself, and is there one or two switches. joe
Expert:  Jeremy R. replied 4 years ago.
That depends on your mechanical abilities and your selection of tools.
There's just one that is the neutral switch that threads out from the rear case.
The new one threads in.
They both unplug and plug right back in.
If I remember correctly you can stand the atv up on it's rear tires and get to the switch through the bottom of the frame.
