yesterday i was on a 300 mile ride . Usually run 60-70 on highway. bike started running bad. Example , die at idle ,backfiring considerable on decell and geardown, engine missing ,checking engine light comming on some times off some times on ,was able to get home ran like this last 125 miles . Could not soomth out in any gear , kept jerking and poping. Allways goes in for the prescribed maintenance every 5,000 .miles. always been done at harley dealer.
Optional Information: Year: 2007 Make: Harley Davidson Model: Soft tail custom Engine: 96 Already Tried: drained gas from tank looked ok ,put fresh gas back still no change
Good day and welcome to Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXX I'd be happy to help you with your problem today. Have you checked the code(s)?
do i need a scanner?
no, you can run them yourself, let me know what you get;
2004-2008The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)SP = speedometerT = tachometer6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.7 - Record the codes.8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected."No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.--------------------------HFSM = Hands Free Security ModuleTSM = Turn signal modulePriority/DTC/Fault condition1. You need to check your plugs & see if you have lost spark on the front cylinder or if that plug is fouled. Let me know as this may go further. It also looks like your o2 sensors have failed. Is the bike stock?
bike has 28,000 miles on it ,bought it new from the dealer where i watched them take it ou of the crate and finish putting it together. Same week i had them put vance and hinds pipes air cleaner and tuner kit at the dealer nothing else has ever been added . has never ran bad since i ownedit
So, with the V&H pipes did they eliminate the o2 sensors or install an eliminator kit?
o2 sensors still there and hooked up
Ok, thanks, have you pulled the plugs yet?
no
Ok, we need to see if the plugs are fouled in order to determine why you are getting a "no combustion" code on the front cyl & why both o2 sensors are showing failed...
plugs have pretty good color and do not show to be fouled BUT spark to both plugs is weak and will not jump more than 1/8 inch when spining engine over
There is no such thing as weak spark in an electronic ignition. So far the issue is confined to 2 failed o2 sensors.
had chance to look some at bike last night. sorry for the delay on getting back with you . Cleared codes went ahead and put two new harley plugs in ran few minutes 131and 151 code returned. cleared again . same codes set again. still runs bad have not rode the bike anymore.
Right. 2 failed o2 sensors, or the tuner that was installed no longer has an effective map. Both need looked into.
