I have a 1991 FXSTC with 47000 miles. This morning as I went to downshift the lever went down one gear then would not downshift again. It will go back into 5th but won't go down again. I read about a spring that can come loose but I only heard of that once in all my searches. I am far from truck or family. Is it safe to ride home? Thanks

Hello,
It sounds like you have a broken shifter return spring. The transmission gear set and likely the inner primary and primary drive has to be removed to access it.
You should be ok to ride home but you will likely have to have it repaired at a shop.
Thank youWayne
