the battery on my '07 sportster keeps discharging. it will accept a charge from a battery charger. the check engine light and the alternator light comes on after riding about a mile.
Hello, have you had the battery load tested and checked the charging system voltage output on the battery terminals?
I took the battery to Auto zone,had it tested,they said it had a low state of charge but was otherwise ok. I hooked a battery charger/electrical system checker to the battery. It indicated the alternator was working ok. One other thing I should mention, the left rear running light stopped working at about the same time the other problems started. I checked the bulb and it was still good.
Running light is probably a broken wire or ground. It also sounds like it might have a flaky regulator if your charge light goes on and off. Check that both ends of the battery cables are tight. Check the connector between the stator and regulator is clean and tight. Does the battery go dead when parked? Could be a drain somewhere. If you only do short trips you might need a trickle charger to keep the battery up.
