Customer Question

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally. A/C compressor is making a grinding sound. Do I need a new compressor? Is it able to be driven until fixed?
JA: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?
Customer: Bottom front pulley on the a/c compressor. Started Friday morning
JA: Are you fixing your Lancer yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes, I'll be doing repairs alongside an ASE mechanic. Have done no troubleshooting yet.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: A/C stopped working a few weeks ago. Fan doesn't engage at all

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
The outside piece spins freely but not the pulley itself.
Expert:  Kevin Bourcier replied 9 months ago.

okay does it have any " side to side " or " up and down " movement ?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
but very minor
Expert:  Kevin Bourcier replied 9 months ago.

so the pulley spins freely and has very little " play " ?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
No the pulley doesn't spin freely, the metal piece on the outside of the pulley spins. And very minor play
Expert:  Kevin Bourcier replied 9 months ago.

unplug the connector on the A/C clutch . Put the belt on and see if the noise is still there . Also have you " spun the other pulleys ? the tensioner ? also have you tried starting the engine without that belt on to see if the noise is still there ? It can also be the water pump making noise .
