Customer Question

My daughters 2001 Diamante quit driving the other day. I ran a diagnostic on it and it said the solenoid C and D were bad. She took it to a shop and the y say it needs a new tranny. I believe they are either lying, or don't know what they are doing. I had her bring it back.
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I am considering replacing the shift solenoids my self
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you noticed any leaking?
Customer: 2001, no leaking. No signs of a problem
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: 140,000 miles

The fluid was a light brown, no smell of burnt oil. 153,000 miles. It does absolutely nothing in any gear. Which makes me believe the tranny has gone out. If it was only the shift solenoids C and D, It probably would at least have reverse?
