I was driving down the interstate and my oil light came on

Customer Question

I was driving down the interstate and my oil light came on and my car shut off. We put new oil in and water and checked everything but it won't crank. Tried to jump it off, still nothing. Even disconnected the battery. It's not getting a spark or it's not getting fuel. I don't know what to do
JA: How many miles are on the car? What size is the engine?
Customer: Almost 200,000 and it's a 2.4
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself?
Customer: Well I have people to help me. I can't really get it to a mechanic
JA: Is there anything else the Mitsubishi Mechanic should be aware of about your Mitsubishi?
Customer: I think that's it.
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the Mitsubishi Mechanic about your situation and then connect you two.

Hi there,

Was it just the oil light came on, and then the engine shut down, in that order?

Or did it cut out, and then you noticed the oil light on?

Does it sound like the starter motor engages to try and turn the engine over?

The engine may have seized up, can you try to turn the engine by hand with a bar and socket?

The oil light came on and then it shut off. And yes it turns
Expert:  Gary replied 5 months ago.

Ok, you can turn the engine by hand, and feels about normal, but it won't crank from the starter, correct?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
We haven't tried by hand but it turns from the starter
Expert:  Gary replied 5 months ago.

Ok, that doesn't sound good.

How much oil did you have to add?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Well I believe I ended up putting two quarts too many in there

What vehicle and year is your car?

What does the engine sound like when you try to start it?

Did it make an unusual noise prior to shutting down?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
It's a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse gsIt's cranking but not firingAnd no sir it didn't

Can you get the vehicle scanned for codes?

A little unusual for the oil pressure lamp to come on, and then shut down the car.

Does the oil light go off while cranking now?

I would be very concerned if the oil light still stays on, we will then need to fit a mechanics oil pressure gauge to check the oil pump.

It could also be a fuel pump that caused the stoppage, and you have two concerns, or one of many things until some further testing is done.

We hooked a code reader to it and no codes came up. And the oil light goes off. I've been told it could be the fuel pump, the oil pump, or a sensor
Expert:  Gary replied 5 months ago.

Ok, that's a good start.

We need to check fuel pressure and spark.

Can we do this now?

Hopefully it is not a broken timing belt.

It's 10:30 here so we won't be able to check it in the dark. It'll have to be done in the morning. And I hope we can check them. I'm not sure if we'll have the correct tools
Expert:  Gary replied 5 months ago.

Ok, I'll be here tomorrow for you.

It's 1.45pm for me now in Australia.
