Mitsubishi Montero Limited: Doug, I have a 2001 Montero

Customer Question

Hi Doug,
I have a 2001 Montero Limited. I have replaced the compressor less than a year ago. A few days ago my AC button started flashing and only hot air came out. We are able to apply direct power and cold air comes out. My mechanic says diagnostics are coming back with an error code #45. He cannot find a schematic to trace the error. Pls help!

Hi,
I don't believe 45 shouldn't be a AC fault (maybe brake or 4WD?).
Given that you get cold air when forced on, have you checked the refrigerant charge yet? The system will shut down (and flash the AC light) when the charge gets low, but long before it is too low to produce cold air if forced on.
I can get you the wiring schematics if that is all you need, I just don't want you to potentially over-diagnose it, if you know what I mean.

Hi Doug,That's the code they pulled. They were puzzled as well. Even calling to the dealer tomorrow.I will check with the mechanic tomorrow morning on the refer charge. Appreciate the quick reply. If the schematics are available. Those would be appreciated. Thanks,
Joel

No problem, I will attach the schematics as well as the trouble code list for you.
Just to be clear, you have a full size Montero (not a Sport), and automatic climate control (not manual a.c.)?
If that is correct, I also need to know if you have rear AC or just the rear air/fan.

I have a Montero Limited 4x4 with automatic climate control and rear AC.

Great, hang on just a minute while I get the schematics for you.
Edit: Make that several minutes... the rear AC one is 11 pages :)

LOL!! Wow. Ok. Thank you.

Thanks for your patience.
Here are the possible trouble codes for the AAC system:

And again I would definitely want to evacuate the system and see how much refrigerant was in there before getting too deep into any other diagnosis... the behavior you are seeing is very typical of a ~20% undercharge. Specifically the AC light flashing is used as an indication of low charge in itself, but the other symptoms support the scenario as well.
